In honor of Black History Month the Council for the Arts will feature the artwork of Clara Johnson.

The ethereal paintings of self-trained artist, Clara K. Johnson, mirror her view of the world and her personality. Ms. Johnson is the grand-daughter of the late Benjamin R. Harrison (creator of "The Golden Bull", mascot for Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte.) Ms. Johnson's art reflects the interconnectedness of the color, form and movement found all around us.

"My style of painting is best described as Biomorphic Abstract. My creative goal is to express how life moves in, out, through, between, around us."
Ms Johnson resides in Raleigh, N.C. In addition to her art she enjoys traveling, reading and helping worthy causes.

"Liquid Dreams" will be shown in our Bradford Baysden Gallery from February 5^th through the 24^th. Meet this fascinating artist at the reception on February 5th from 2:30 pm to 4 pm. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Jacksonville (NC) Alumnae Chapter will host the event.

The Council will exhibit over 30 paintings by Emerald Isle artist Georgia Mason. She is a member of the Watercolor Society of NC and the Southwestern Watercolor Society. Her non-representational paintings are created in watercolors, mixed media and, often, “found objects.”

Ms. Mason states: “My painting has evolved over the years from my early beginnings in watercolor to the experimental mixed media work that I am now doing. I was fortunate to have had a disciplined education in representational art with drawing lessons, still life, landscapes and plein air painting. Then my eyes opened to the beauty of non-representational work as I began working with mixed media. My current work involves a process of creating an underpainting using inks, watercolor and acrylics. Then I build the painting with papers and paint, altering surfaces with transparent passages and opaque over-painting. I use whatever evolves in the creative process.”

Meet this fascinating artist at the Gallery Reception on Sunday August 7^th from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. The Arts Council is located on New Bridge Street across from Jacksonville City Hall. Council Board members attend ART DAY 2011 in Raleigh.

Several Board Members attended Arts Day 2011 last Tuesday in Raleigh, NC as representatives from Onslow County. The event is organized and lead by ARTS North Carolina, a statewide advocacy organization for the arts. ARTS NC calls for equity and access for the arts for all North Carolinians, unifies and connects North Carolina's arts communities, and fosters arts leadership. The day was filled with key note speakers, arts advocacy materials and training, plus speaking with government officials to exemplify the importance of the arts on our economy, education, and well being. The event is a yearly Legislative event that organizes and facilitates Grassroots Advocacy... the main source of arts funding for Onslow (and most NC counties) County.

Most people have the misconception that government funding of arts means their hard-earned tax dollars are going straight to some hippie busker playing an acoustic guitar on the street corner, or an artist whose goal is to shock the world with crayon masterpieces, or the photographer whose wants to stretch the boundaries of censorship but the truth of the matter is that art is a investment. Like most investments, there are some risks and some returns are greater than others but investing in the arts is a sound venture with overall paybacks too consistent to ignore. When our tax dollars are used to fund the arts they provide direct economic benefits to states and communities, they create jobs, attract investments, generate tax revenues, and stimulate local economies through tourism and consumer purchases. A robust arts industry prepares our children for the 21st century, and fills our lives with discovery and learning. Government funding is a crucial element in maintaining the arts industry even in tough economic times. After all, the arts are not part of the recession; they are part of the recovery. Pablo Picasso was on to something when he said, "Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life".

On a positive note: We got to spend the day with some great friends plus meet a ton of people passionate about the arts! I got to hear inspiring stories by several speakers including the golden voice of jazz singer and NC resident, Nnenna Freelon. We had the pleasure of meeting Onslow County Representative Phil Shepard. He was kind enough to meet with several members of our group without an appointment. He even invited us to lunch but we had to decline as our lunch was already provided by ARTS NC.

On a negative note: Our meeting with Onslow County Representative George Cleveland was cut short from the fifteen minutes scheduled to a whopping three minutes. Our appointment with him was disappointing to say the least as his mind seemed elsewhere. The main disappointment was the 23% cut in funding of the grass roots art grants that will directly effect us here in Onslow County.

The community is mourning the loss of a pioneer for arts and education in Onslow County.

Jean Wenner, artist and former executive director of the Onslow County Council for the Arts, died at home Wednesday after a long illness. She was 80.

Her daughter Connie Wenner, who was appointed director of the council after her mother retired in 2004, said the community has been greatly impacted by her mother’s talent and drive to bring awareness to art and culture to the area.

“We always say it’s difficult in Onslow County, because it’s so transient, to keep your name out there,” Connie Wenner said. “It was just her sheer stubbornness to continue her legacy to the arts council, her commitment and her accountability.”

The council was founded in 1976 when Jack LeSueur of the North Carolina Arts Council discussed with Jean Wenner the idea of forming a local arts council. At that time, Wenner was active in the Arts Society of Onslow County, according to the Council for the Arts website at jaxarts.com. She was named director and began the organization as a volunteer from her home.

A native of Auburn, N.Y., Wenner originally moved to Jacksonville with her husband Richard Wenner, who served for 27 years in the Marine Corps. Jean Wenner remained in Jacksonville to raise their eight children while her husband traveled throughout his career. A self-taught artist, Wenner found time to experiment with pencil, pen and inks, and later moved into oils, watercolors and pastels. She became well-known in the area and received numerous awards for her pastel still lifes. Connie Burke, family friend and long time council volunteer, said that she admired Wenner’s ability to balance home life and her love for art.

“I could ask her anything about art and she had an answer for it,” Burke said. “I think what amazed me most about her was what a great job she did with raising her children.”

It was Wenner’s love for children that inspired many of the council’s workshops and programs, according to those who knew her. Through grant writing and seeking contributions from the county and city, she was able to grow the council budget of $1,500 in its early years to more than $112,000 a year. During her 28 years as director, writing and art workshops, gallery exhibitions and receptions were birthed and the council’s current location in downtown Jacksonville was established. Some of the continued programs include the Community Artist Residency Training program, the Pre-School Theater Series and the award-winning Arts in the Schools program.

Earl Taylor, who served as supervisor of arts education for Onslow County Schools, called Wenner the cornerstone for the arts in Onslow County.

“Jean was very passionate and she knew the positive impact that arts had on children,” Taylor said. “Providing more exposure in the arts for children was one of her strong points.”

Wenner also received many honors for her service, including the State Arts Council Volunteer of the Year and Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year in 1990. Nov. 20, 1984, was proclaimed “Jean Wenner Day” by former Jacksonville Mayor Zander Guy. In September, the council’s board of directors voted to name the council library and studio after her.

Connie Wenner said that her mother’s various family portraits and pastel paintings that remain in the art gallery, as well as the council’s continued growth, will be a constant reminder of her faithful service to the community.

“Mom was just a phenomenal person and with her legacy and the years she contributed to community, I hope I can continue to do as good as she did,” she said.

At Wenner’s request, there will be no wake or service. In the spring, Wenner’s ashes will be taken to Pennsylvania where she will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Council for the Arts, P.O. Box 34, Jacksonville, NC 28541-0034.

Jean Wenner, founder and former Director of the Council for the Arts passed away December 14, 2010. She truly enriched her community and left a positive legacy in her memory. Her impact on Onslow County concerning the Arts is beyond measure as a pioneer with vision for the arts in our community. She was dedicated to her family and extended family of friends and artists. She opened doors and created many opportunities for countless local artists (myself included) who will forever be grateful for her dedication. She was an accomplished artist whose work crowns many collections throughout the country.

The community has lost a great artist and art advocate... Tami, Olivia, and I have lost a great friend. I am so glad that she got see the "Jean Wenner Art Library and Studio" named in honor of her and her many, many contributions to the arts and our community. She can never be replaced but she will always be remembered! Thank goodness her legacy will live on through her family and friends!

Pottery from the Coastal Carolina Clay Guild The North Carolina Pottery Center is pleased to announce the exhibition, Pottery from the Coastal Carolina Clay Guild, with an opening reception that is free to the public on Friday, August 13 from 6-8 pm. The exhibit, which includes for sale pieces, will be on exhibit August 13-November 13, 2010.

The Coastal Carolina Clay Guild was founded in 2007 by a group of Wilmington potters with the purpose of sharing ideas and promoting the art and craft of pottery in our community. The Guild has grown to 100 members who reside in the eastern regions of North and South Carolina and are a diverse group consisting of full time, part time, and student potters.

Almost half of the guild members are participating in this show including Dina Wilde Ramsing, whose imaginative figure works are published in many books; Don Johns, known for special crystalline glazes and surface decoration; Gayle Tustin, painter and clay muralist, Vicky Smith, UNCW instructor who mixes unfired clay with paint and glue; Geoff Calabrese, Cape Fear Community College instructor who makes head sculptures; Melanie Walter who combines clay with pine needles; Bill and Lacy Struve who invented bronze metal clay; and Hiroshi Sueyoshi, who uses crater glaze on altered form vessels. Mr. Sueyoshi is also president of Coastal Carolina Clay Guild, and will curate the show.

The coastal region of the Carolinas does not have a traditional pottery history, but does have a thriving and supportive art community and is a growing part of the rich craft heritage of North Carolina.

The Coastal Carolina Pottery Exhibit will be on display at the North Carolina Pottery Center through November 13th, 2010. The NCPC, a non-profit entity which is supported in great part by donations from individuals, is located in Seagrove one of the state's key historical and contemporary pottery producing regions.

Regional Artist Project Grants

The Regional Artist Project Grants are awarded to artists throughout eastern North Carolina in 29 counties, and is a grants program partially funded by the North Carolina Arts Council.

Eligible artists include North Carolina residents who have resided in eastern North Carolina for at least 2 years in the following counties: Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, Washington, Wayne, and Wilson counties. Artists can include musicians, dancers, filmmakers, actors, literary artists, as well as visual artists. The average grant award is between $500 and $1,000.

This date and location was selected as our rescheduled date from our April Paint Out that was rained out... . Dean Remington organized the location. Thanks Dean!

WHERE: Maysville/Belgrade Rock Quarry Fishing Lakes. Meet at the Fishing Info and Bait Shack. Detailed directions from Dean below.

WHY: Simply put... we LOVE plein air painting!

Newbies welcome... all mediums and skill levels... simply show up with your gear and be prepared to have fun!

What the heck is OOPS and how do I join the FUN?

DIRECTIONS:
From Jacksonvile/south:
Travel north on highway 17 towards Maysville there will be "White Oak river campground" on your right after you go through Belgrade. You will cross a bridge and enter into Jones county as you PASS the campground. Look to the right and you will see a white and red "fishing" sign. There will also be a yellow "live minnows" sign under that. Turn right there. It is a dirt road. As you follow it you will see Maysville cemetary on your left. Follow the road to the right. The road will curve to the left about a quarter mile ahead and a two lane dirt path will go straight. FOLLOW THE ROAD!. You are now there! You can let them know at the shack you are with the painting group and you will not be charged anything. If you are bringing someone with you who likes to fish it is $5.00 for the day. No license is necessary if they stay on the 2 private lakes. If they bring a boat, only electric motors are authorized. You can also rent boats there too.

Several artists recently enjoyed a one day workshop given by artist and friend, Mike Rooney. Mike taught the Cape Cod style of painting which is colorful and FULL of light. He went through various exercises, did a plein air demo, and then gave personal attention as the artists painted. The style was very challenging for many but it was a breath of fresh air to be challenged to learn something new. A special thanks to the Council for the Arts for subsidising and organizing this awesome workshop!

Art-A-Thon for June 26th at Jerry's Artarama Raleigh...

We are organizing an Art-A-Thon for June 26th!

Our event in March to raise money for Haiti was a big hit, so we are putting on another one to raise money in response to the oil spill crisis in the Gulf. Even by conservative estimates, the recent spill has surpassed the Exxon Valdez disaster by gushing close to 40 million gallons of oil into the Gulf. Due to this devastating occurrence, beaches and sea life are at risk.

All proceeds will be given to the National Wildlife Federation and their efforts to help wildlife impacted by the spill. We will be setting up in the vacant building next to our retail store on Wake Forest Rd. from 11-7.

Artists will paint throughout the day, and then the pieces they create will be raffled off. Tickets will be sold for $5, or 5 tickets for $20. We will also have t-shirts for sale. Come out for a chance to win your favorite piece(s) and support a great cause!

We pay tribute to sculpture and printmaking this summer. Jacksonville artists Libby Jacobi & Johnnie Lee Scott will be the featured artists for the show “Clay & Ink” scheduled for the Bradford Baysden Gallery. Johnnie and Libby met sixteen years ago at Wildacres in Little Switzerland where they took clay and printmaking workshops together.

Johnnie’s statement: “My imagery records landscapes, early 20th century houses, and interiors of houses, churches, barns, rural family life, and graveyards. These images represent the emotions I have towards these foregone subjects and how they relate to my rural childhood. Some of my imagery is portrayed during late evening hours when high contrast of light and dark occurs from the setting sun.

I also do some intaglios of family and friends. I have used some older photographs from the eighteen and early nineteen hundreds. I never have used published photographs. Most of my images were created from my own photographs. My aim has always been to tell stories or history with my content.

The intaglios were created using transparencies on Copper colored Solarplates. I scanned the images and used Photo Elements to make the transparencies. An aquatint screen was used to develop rich darks. The Solarplates were exposed using a light box. The images were developed by scrubbing the Solarplates with water and a brush for two minutes, then dried and hardened in the light box for twelve minutes. The Solarplates were inked using water base inks and printed on printmaking paper using my hand turned etching press. Some of the prints were framed with the inked Solarplate.”

Libby’s statement: “My work is partlyfigurative with suggestions of fabric (and actual fabric) and lots of whimsy, using nature in my pieces such as bamboo, flowers, and seed pods and vines, I guess you can call my work very eclectic. I use raku firing as a finish for many pieces and low fire glazes on others.

My Name is Stacey Owens Howard and I am the Executive Director of Z.E.C.A., Inc (Zero to Eighteen Education Concept Academy). Connie at the Jacksonville Art’s Council provided me with your contact information. She felt you may be able to assist me with finding interested persons for working this summer through your internet blog.

ZECA is a newly formed non profit established to provide mentoring, afterschool and tutoring services to children ages 5 to 18 with a particular focus on at-risk children. We have been awarded the 21st century learning summer program grant and will be using these funds to provide summer camp for Onslow County Students ages 5 to 15. Our summer program will cover the following areas:

· Math and reading enrichment
· Cultural arts
· Community service learning

I am in need of an experience dance, art, music, and theater teacher. It’s a part time position (6 hours weekly), working Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2pm to 4pm. The pay is $25 dollars per hour. The art class will be offered from 11:00 and 1:00 on those same days.
The applicant does not necessary have to be a NC certified teacher but experienced in the art. We do have to follow the NC standard course of study.

Our camp will be held at Bell Fork Church of Christ and Washington Chapel Missionary Baptist Church both locations located on Bell Fork Road. Camp begins June 14 and ends August 13. Interested persons may contact me at 910-650-1599 for an application.

This picture is of a gathering of people on the banks of the New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina (circa 1905). Like in days of old... people will gather once again on the banks of the New River at Water Front Park near the Pellitier House in downtown Jacksonville.

This year the Onslow Historical Society’s New River Banks Party will be May 30 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Highlights will be the Chowder cook-off, OOPS Paint-out and this year the Card Board Regatta will take to the water. The Onslow Historical Society receives Grassroots Grant money from the Council.

The celebration party is FREE to the public! Make plans to attend...

OPPS artists will position themselves around the park and the historic Pellitier House painting en plein aire for one of their May Paint Out from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

HI all,

Attached you will find a flyer advertising our new group. Our small group/critique sessions will meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 7 p.m. at the Book Exchange on Western Blvd. That's May 12 and 26 and June 9 and 23.

I'm also attaching a copy of our critique/comment process. For those of you who haven't seen this before, it is taken from Sheila Bender's classes and her book published through Writers Digest. It moves the focus away from the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, spelling and puts emphasis on what is working or not working in conveying emotion, feeling, setting, mood and more. When I first tried this, it felt very different and even a bit awkward, but after the first manuscript or two it becomes easy to use. And it allows folks from any field or genre to provide useful feedback. We'll leave the line editing and proofreading for when the author specifically asks for that type of feedback. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

I'm also attaching a copy of our bylaws for those unable to make the last meeting.

Please feel free to invite friends and other interested writers to come to any of the meetings. We'll continue to accept new members as they appear. This may, and probably will, end up forcing us to form two or more critique groups, but that is all to the good.

So, if you have somewhere you can post a flyer, please do so, and spread the word among your friends as well.

HUB-BUB is a grassroots arts non-profit that aims to build community through dynamic art and ideas. WHAT: OOPS! April Paint Out (organized by Phyllis Eaton Steimel and Dean Remington)

WHEN: Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 1PM until... some members plann to arrive at Noon to get an early start.

This date was selected so Phyllis Eaton Steimel and two other members of the group, Plein Air Carolina, can paint with us. Phyllis has be trying to coordinate dates to paint with us the past two years... this is a great opportunity to do so. Dean organized the location.

WHERE: Maysville/Belgrade Rock Quarry Fishing Lakes. Meet at the Fishing Info and Bait Shack. Detailed directions from Dean below.

WHY: Simply put... we LOVE plein air painting! Will be GREAT to paint with some new friends!

There will also be a yellow "live minnows" sign under that. Turn right there. It is a dirt road. As you follow it you will see Maysville cemetary on your left. Follow the road to the right. The road will curve to the left about a quarter mile ahead and a two lane dirt path will go straight. FOLLOW THE ROAD!. You are now there! You can let them know at the shack you are with the painting group and you will not be charged anything. If you are bringing someone with you who likes to fish it is $5.00 for the day. No license is necessary if they stay on the 2 private lakes. If they bring a boat, only electric motors are authorized. You can also rent boats there too.

"Miss Bea" will be missed...

"Miss Bea" (Nov. 11, 1919 – April 8, 2010)

Beatrice Allen Wallace enjoyed an early idyllic childhood growing up during the 1920s between her birth town of Wallkill, N.Y., and her mother's residence in New York City proper. On the eve of World War II, "Bea" met a Marine, John Wallace, in September of 1939, married him in 1940, and came to Camp LeJeune/Jacksonville in 1949, where her family of son, Bob Wallace of Hampstead, and daughter, Lynn Wallace Ward of Greenville, were raised. Returning to school at 48, she completed her B.A. degree with honors in 4 ½ years at UNC-W and taught fourth grade at Bell Fork School for 10 years. Over her many years in Jacksonville, "Miss Bea" participated in and supported various little theater companies; but most importantly, she painted in watercolors and was a member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society. She also at various times traveled extensively from Hawaii to Istanbul, Turkey. Her husband and she also enjoyed taking cruises into the Caribbean, visiting the coastal cities of Mexico. Locally, she was a member of the Onslow Arts Society and a founding member of the Council for the Arts , serving in various capacities over the years. Miss Bea retired to North Topsail Beach and joined Surf City Baptist Church where she remained an active member until health issues necessitated her entering into long-term care. When Miss Bea passed on April 8, 2010, she was 90 years old.

The attached photo is the successful outdoor umbrella display - Yahooie ! not one took flight or banged into one another ! the umbrellas in the photos are the "test" ones -- a few have given their best for the cause ! We hope to have many painted umbrellas to display at the Spring Craft Fair & Car Show on May 1st. See we can do things and keep it simple !!

URGENT Announcement from Connie Wenner, Director, Council for the Arts

Everyone, the new roof that they are putting on has hit snags, seems the “Leak proof membrane” is not so leak proof after all!. The gallery room, that connects to the other side of our building has sprung a leak or 3, also the hallway next to kitchen has a spot. So, I cancelled the Saturday’s writer’s workshop, since I don’t know if anymore spots are going to show up. I called all the art teachers to collect there student’s work, I’d hate to see any get damaged. I cancelled the Onslow Art Society’s Spring show until May, since the roofers will not be back until the 5th of April, I will not take a chance. That means the CCCC art show (scheduled for May) has been cancelled for this year. We will overcome this too!!!!!!

So as it stands no show here for the month of April.

To the editor:

We would like to respond to a statement by Daily News columnist Carole Moore in her column headlined, “What’s to love and not to love about Onslow,” in which she stated that there are no cultural opportunities in Onslow County “except for high school productions and in bars.”

As art educators, we were stunned to read this. We would like to remind Moore, current Onslow County residents and any newcomers to the county of the cultural opportunities that do exist here.

We recognize that 10 years ago, such opportunities were even fewer and farther between, and that it has taken a number of individuals working tirelessly on your behalf to bring these cultural events to the citizens of Onslow County.

Let’s start with a glaring omission — that of the Jacksonville Council for the Arts. Located at 828 Bridge St., near the main post office, the Council for the Arts gallery hosts monthly exhibits and performances from both amateur and professional artists and musicians. The grant-writing efforts of both former director Jean Wenner and current director Connie Wenner have led to ballet, opera, theatre and puppet performances for the public as well as for area students. The tireless efforts of these two women have greatly enhanced the cultural offerings in our area. We thank you, Jean and Connie!

Thank you Deb and Sara for this letter to the editor of the Daily News. The Board at the Council for the Arts knows first hand just how hard Connie and each board member works to educate, support, and promote the arts in our community of Onslow County, NC. Well over $20,000 per year is filtered through the Council to the community for the Arts in many different venues including Grass Roots and Ethnic groups, school programs, countless programs for children, gallery shows, workshops, etc. We even maintan this blog to get the word out to the public about such events. Thank you for all you do for the arts in our community and all the other organizations who are making a difference out there.

This show, Living Our Legacy, Honoring Our Past and Shaping Our Future in the Arts will showcase paintings, basket weaving, music and storytelling by artists past and present.

* Artists: Ms. BF Reed, Ms. Annie Mattock and Mr. Pearless Speller, Ms. Nettie Hardison (deceased) and Ms. Angelica Gilliam and Ms. Alexis Gilliam (young artists.)

* Music: Ms. Roberta Spicer, Ms. Sonja Williams and Ms. Allison Tynise Sutton (young musician.)

* Basket Weaving: Ms. Margaret E. Brown.

American Dance Festival, Durham

The American Dance Festival will embark on a 14-city tour in February to audition potential students for tuition scholarships for the 2010 ADF Six Week School. Tuition scholarships are offered to promising students who have a high level of technical ability and creative potential and who have experience in either performing or choreographing. The awards are based on both ability and financial need. Students unable to attend an audition may submit a DVD containing two minutes of technique and a one-and-a-half minute solo along with their application package.

Alternate Selves is an exhibition that explores the transformative power of costume and will be held Friday, April 23, through Saturday, June 26. Through theater, annual holiday celebrations (such as Halloween and Mardi Gras) and even contemporary drag shows, costumes have allowed the wearer to reveal a new identity or at times hide from their own. The Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce is seeking local artists to design the 2010 Washington Summer Festival T-shirt. The Summer Festival T-shirt is a keepsake for many citizens of Washington and thousands of T-shirts are sold. The design should be reflective of the downtown Washington area and should include some type of boat and a crab. The design should be three colors (including white) and include "Washington Summer Festival 2010." Two different designs are needed: one for the adult shirts and one for the children's shirts. The winners will have their design and signature on the T-shirts, receive a plaque and be recognized in all publicity.

OOPS January Paint Out

Be sure to mark your calendar for a special painting treat for our January paint out. We will dodge he COLD by painting inside... the subject... a LIVE person! I realize that a life class may seem intimidating to many but look at it as a way to challenge yourself and learn by doing something different. I think there are only handful of portrait artists in our group so this will be a challenge for most... myself included. Our live model will be Jeremy... he will dress in a Civil War period uniform which will make for a cool character study. He will sit for the study from 1PM till 4PM so make plans to arrive on time to get a good spot. The session will be held indoors at the Council for the Arts on New Bridge Street... Connie Wenner was kind enough to allow us to use the studio room. We will pass the hat to take up a donation to give to Jeremy for so graciously volunteering as our model.

The art community lost a loyal friend last month. Reggie had been a member and active supporter of the Arts Council since 1976. She was a member of the Onslow Art Society for as long as anyone can remember. Reggie was an enthusiastic and prolific artist; she entered every art show in our area, winning numerous awards.

Thurston Art Gallery is a quaint building with some history itself... orininally an old church built in 1939.

15 Onslow County artists from the plein air painting group OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) gathered to paint the historical Yopp's Meeting House est in 1813 as a fundraiser.

Several of those 15 artists attended the opening reception for the exhibit last Sunday, October 25th.
